Marlins win first, drop second at Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan College's softball Marlins have fallen into a pattern that head coach Brandon Elliott really doesn't care to see at this point of the season.

Splits.

For the third consecutive Old Dominion Athletic Conference twinbill, the Marlins have managed to win just one game, this time in a doubleheader with host Lynchburg College.  VWC won the opener 5-3 and dropped the second game 4-0.

VWC (25-7, 10-6) outhit Lynchburg (20-16, 8-10)  9-7 in the win, but managed only two hits in the loss, despite not striking out once.  Lynchburg scored all the runs it needed in the first inning, belting out three hits that helped score the four runs.

Lynchburg managed only one more hit after that inning, but VWC could not find the bats to tke advantage of the situation.

The Marlins fared a little better in the first game, but had to produce two hits in the top of the seventh to pull out the win.  Lynchburg tied the game with a two-run sixth.

Tori Higginbotham and Jaclyn Quinn connected for two hits each for VWC in the contest.

The Marlins compete again on Tuesday, Apr. 12, in a non-conference doubleheader at North Carolina Wesleyan College beginning at 3 p.m.
