LYNCHBURG, Va. -- After pinning a 9-0 loss on the host WildCats of Randolph College on Saturday, the Virginia Wesleyan College softball team fell victim to the "payback" in the second game of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader.
Randolph (13-12, 3-6) pulled off the upset with a 6-2 victory, helped by the bat of Brittany Willingham (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie). She connected for a double and two home runs in the game, driving in four runs. She connected for a two-run homer in each of the first and third innings to give the 'Cats momentum.
Virginia Wesleyan (19-3, 6-2) led 1-0 in the top of the first inning, but could not find the gaps for big hits. The Marlins finished with seven hits overall, with Tori Higginbotham (Glen Allen, Va..J.R. Tucker) the only VWC batter to stroke a double.
Sophomore Christina Crawford (Norfolk, Va./Granby)dropped to 9-2 with the pitching loss, while Randolph's Brittany Via (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) improved to 3-3. Via struck out seven Marlins and did not allow an earned run.
Game One was a different story for Virginia Wesleyan, as the Marlins pulled away with a five-run third inning. VWC connected for eight hits overall, including a home run by junior Brianna Bertovich (Richmond, Va./Monacan) and a double from Jaclyn Quinn (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory).
Rookie MacKenzie Creech (Hillsborough, N.C./Orange)struck out five batters and did not allow an earned run in three innings. Crawford pitched the final two innings for the Marlins, striking out two. Creech improved to 10-1 with the win.
Shelbie West (Glen Allen, Va./Patrick Henry) and Kristen Hutchisnon (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) pitched for Randolph, combining to strike out five, walk five, and allow eight hits and five earned runs.
VWC's doubleheader at Lynchburg College on Sunday, Mar. 27, has been postponed and rescheduled for Sunday, Apr. 10, at 1:30 p.m. at Lynchburg. The Marlins' next competition is slated for Wednesday, Mar. 30, when they host the Eagles of the Unviersity of Mary Washington beginning at 3 p.m.
