James Moskowitz was named Director of Men's & Women's Tennis at Virginia Wesleyan University in January 2026. He joined the Marlins as an assistant coach to the women's and men's tennis teams in the fall of 2022, working alongside former Director Toni Bickford.
Since joining Virginia Wesleyan, Moskowitz has been instrumental in the program's success. In the 2024-25 season, he helped guide the Men's Tennis team to finish as the #5 Seed in the ODAC Championship Tournament. The team was also ranked as high as No. 67 in the country for the second time in program history.
In the 2023-24 season, Moskowitz contributed to the Men's Tennis team's outstanding 16-7 overall record and 8-1 conference performance, clinching the No. 2 seed in the ODAC Championship tournament. The Men's team achieved a historic milestone, being Nationally ranked for the first time in program history at No. 44 on April 3rd and climbing as high as No. 41 in the Nation on April 24th. Three players earned All-Conference honors, and Ole Behrmann was named ODAC Rookie of the Year.
On the women's side, he helped guide the 2024-25 team to a 10-9 record, securing the #4 Seed of the ODAC Championship Tournament and advancing to the Semifinals for the first time since Spring 2021. 2024-25 accolades included Zoe Vliegen's claim to First Team All-Conference for the #2 Singles spot, as well as a First Team All-Conference mention for Doubles with teammate Mikisha Thomas. 2025-26 early highlights include Tuva Flink's recognition as ODAC singles player of the week.
Academically both teams have thrived. The men were recognized as an ITA All-Academic Team in 2024 and 2025, and the Marlins are proud to be running a two year streak at the University for Outstanding Graduating Senior in Chemistry (Sainandan Challagundia ('25), Felix Bevc ('24)). The women were recognized as an ITA All-Academic Team in 2025, with 8 individuals honored as ITA scholar athletes the same year. Four individuals were honored as ITA scholar-athletes in 2024.
No stranger to the sport, James Moskowitz played tennis at Franklin & Marshall College under his coach and mentor, Jim Phipps, to whom he is forever grateful for having made the team a family and the courts a home away from home. Moskowitz ('98) was a four-year starter in singles and doubles for the Diplomats, who went 45-20 during his tenure. The team made an NCAA appearance in his junior year. As a sophomore, he was honored as a Centennial Conference all-conference selection in doubles, and as a senior served as team captain.
Prior to joining the Virginia Wesleyan tennis coaching staff, Moskowitz was the head coach of the girl's and boy's tennis teams at Norfolk Collegiate School where he led the program to new heights, including a VISAA state championship (Girls 2021) and numerous state finals on the boys and girls sides. He was honored as VISAA State Coach of the Year in 2021 and by the TCIS conference as Coach of the Year in 2019 and 2021.
James has also been a staff teaching pro at ODU's Folkes Stevens Tennis Center and at the Legacy Youth Tennis and Education Center in Philadelphia.
Fun fact: James' twin brother was a four-year starter for the Marlin's tennis team. Senior year, when the teams scheduled a match in which the brothers would play on the record for the first time, it rained and the match never happened.
