Dennis Nelson joined the Virginia Wesleyan University Athletic Department as the head men's and women's golf coach in July of 2020. 

Prior to joining the VWU family, Nelson coached at Hampton University for four seasons during which the Pirates saw improvement year-to-year under his direction. During his first season in 2016-17, Nelson's women's team won the Delaware State Tournament, while the men's team had three top finishes at the Savannah State and Maryland Eastern Shore fall tournaments. In addition, the men's team stroke average dropped by 20 strokes.

Nelson spent much of his life serving in the United States Navy occupying various ranks from 1989 to 2013. He attended basic training in Great Lakes, Ill. before moving to Chesapeake, Va. in 1989.

Nelson served as Chief Petty Officer Aviation Boatswain’s Mate until 2013. In addition, he served as aviation trainer and evaluator from 2005-08.

Nelson was a two-time recipient of the Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal and a four-time recipient of the Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medal. He was awarded seven Navy Good Conduct Medals and nine Sea Service Deployment Medals. In addition, Nelson was awarded the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

Nelson graduated from Wando (S.C.) High School in 1988 before enlisting. He a native of Mount Pleasant, S.C., has one son, Tre’Vaughn. In his spare time, Nelson enjoys playing golf, softball, and going bowling.
