The Virginia Wesleyan University softball team (34-7, 20-2 ODAC) defeated Roanoke College 6-3 in game one of the 2024 Softball ODAC Championship Finals.
Mackenzie Myers led the offense going 2-for-4 with a triple and tallied two RBI, Sarah Prosser was 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and scored three runs, and Laci Campbell was 2-for-3, scored one run, and stole one base.
Emma Adams registered the win for VWU, pitched a complete game, allowed seven hits, three runs, two earned runs, and tallied four strikeouts.
Roanoke struck first with a homer to center field to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. The Marlins responded in the bottom of the second as Olivia Knight walked followed by an Emma Adams double to right center field that scored Knight to cut the visitor's lead to 2-1.
The Maroons scored a run in the top of the third to extend their lead to 3-1. However, Virginia Wesleyan countered with a run in the bottom of the third. Sarah Prosser singled to the shortstop, Laci Campbell singled to left center to put runners on first and second, and Alison Pollack singled to load up the bases. Olivia Knight worked a walk to score Prosser from third to bring the score to 3-2.
Emma Adams shut the door on Roanoke in the top of the fourth to give the offense a chance to take the lead. With two outs, Prosser singled up the middle and stole second, and Campbell singled to the pitcher to put runners on the corners. Then, Mackenzie Myers hit a triple to right center field to score Prosser and Campbell gave VWU their first lead of the day at 4-3.
In the sixth inning, the Marlins extended their lead as Julia Piotrowski hit a bunt single to get on base. She stole second, advanced to third on an error by the catcher, and scored on an error by the center fielder to put VWU up 5-3. Prosser hit her third single of the day and stole second, then Campbell was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second, and Myer singled up the middle to load up the bases. With the bases loaded Pollack hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Prosser to give the Marlins a 6-3 lead.
Game two against Roanoke is set to start on Saturday, May 11, at 1:30 p.m.
