The Virginia Wesleyan University softball (30-7, 20-2 ODAC) swept Sweet Briar College in doubleheader, winning game one 12-0 and won game two 16-4. With the Win the softball team clinched the No. 1 seed in the ODAC Championship Tournament.
Game One:
The first inning saw Virginia Wesleyan's batters capitalizing on opportunities with precision. Key hits from Karley Beltran and Joslyn Woodard drove in early runs, quickly putting Sweet Briar on the defensive. A sacrifice fly from Olivia Knight added to the onslaught, giving Virginia Wesleyan a formidable 4-0 lead by the end of the inning.
In the second inning, a ground out by Olivia Knight brought Laci Campbell home, extending their lead to 5-0.
Virginia Wesleyan continued to pile on the runs, with each player contributing to their team's offensive dominance scoring two runs in the third and five runs in the fourth to increase their lead to 12-0.
Alison Pollack was 2-for-3 with a double, and an RBI, Emily Halloway was 2-for-3, scored one run, and had two RBI.
Emma Adams recorded her 15th win of the season, pitched 2.0 innings, and allowed two hits, and one strikeout.
Game Two:
The game kicked off with Sweet Briar making an early statement, scoring one run to put Sweet Briar ahead 1-0 in the first inning. However, Virginia Wesleyan quickly responded with a barrage of hits in the bottom of the inning, led by Laci Campbell's RBI single and Emma Adams' timely hit, pushing Virginia Wesleyan ahead 3-1.
Virginia Wesleyan's offense continued to surge in the second inning, capitalizing on Sweet Briar's defensive lapses. Olivia Knight's double drove in three unearned runs, extending Virginia Wesleyan's lead to 6-1. Emma Adams followed up with another RBI single, further widening the gap to 8-1.
The third inning proved to be Virginia Wesleyan's most explosive yet, as they unleashed an offensive onslaught that left Sweet Briar reeling. A combination of hits, walks, and a wild pitch allowed Virginia Wesleyan to plate an impressive eight runs in the inning, highlighted by Emily Halloway's grand slam that propelled them to a commanding 16-1 lead.
Despite the deficit, Sweet Briar showed resilience in the fourth and fifth innings, managing to score three more runs. However, it was too little, too late as Virginia Wesleyan's lead proved insurmountable.
Emily Halloway was 1-for-3, hit a grand slam, scored two runs, and had four RBI, Olivia Knight was 2-for-4 with a double, scored two runs, and had three RBI, Emma Adams was 2-for-2, and had three RBI.
Emma Adams registered 3.0 inning and allowed one run, and one hit.
