The Virginia Wesleyan University softball team (20-7, 10-2 ODAC) split their doubleheader with Lynchburg winning game one 3-2, and losing game two 9-4.
Game One:
Joslyn Woodard hit a single to center field to start the rally, then
Karley Beltran singled, and
Laci Campbell singled to load the bases for
Mackenzie Myers. Myers walked to score Woodard from third and put VWU up 1-0. With the bases loaded,
Olivia Knight doubled to score Beltran and Campbell to give the Marlins a 3-0 lead.
The Marlins held the Hornets scoreless until the top of the seventh, where the visitors scored two runs off four hits, but Virginia Wesleyan got the final out in time to seal the 3-2 win.
Joslyn Woodard went 2-for-2 in the game with a double and scored one run,
Olivia Knight was 1-for-2 with a two-RBI double, and
Karley Beltran was 1-for-2, scored one run, and had one stolen base.
Emma Adams had a great game pitching 7.0 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, and had three strikeouts.
Game Two:
The Hornets' offense began the scoring in the second inning, scoring one run to lead 1-0. The Marlins responded as
Julia Piotrowski singled up the middle and stole second, followed by a double from
Joslyn Woodard to score Piotrowski tying the game at 1-1.
Lynchburg scored another run in the third inning to lead 2-1, but VWU tied it up at 2-2 in the bottom of the third.
Olivia Knight reached on a fielder's choice before
Emma Adams doubled to score Knight.
In the fourth inning, the Hornets scored two runs to lead the Marlins 4-2. However, Virginia Wesleyan scored two runs of their own in the fifth inning to tie up the game at 4-4. Myers singled to center field to begin the fifth and stole second. Then, Knight walked, and
Emma Adams singled to left center and scored Myers from second to force a pitching change from the visitors.
Haley Sadler singled to second and advanced to second on a throwing error that scored Knight to tie the game.
Seven innings couldn't separate the two teams as they headed into the eighth. Lynchburg managed to score five runs on two hits, and one error to seal the 9-4 win over VWU.
Emma Adams led the offense in game two going 2-for-4 with a double, and two RBI,
Julia Piotrowski was 2-for-4, scored one run, and had one stolen base, and
Mackenzie Myers went 1-for-3, scored one run, and recorded a stolen base.
Savannah Laird started the game in the circle and pitched 3.2 innings, allowing four runs on six hits, and registered two strikeouts,
Lauren Bible came in relief pitching 3.2 innings and allowed five runs on one hit, and had one strikeout, and
Julia Piotrowski pitched the last 0.2 innings and allowed two hits.
