The Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey team pulled out a thrilling 3-2 double-overtime win against Drew University.
DJ Holsclaw had a great game playing 77:08 minutes, making nine saves, and allowing two goals,
Ava Stauch led the team with two goals, and
Mary Ruffin had the game-winning goal for the Marlins.
Ava Stauch broke the deadlock between the two teams in the 22nd minute of play with an assist from
Lauren Hedspeth who hit Stauch on a long pass down the left side to put the goal scorer on a breakaway.
Drew fought back and scored at the 34:54 mark and took the lead six minutes later with a goal at the 40:52 mark to take a 2-1 lead.
VWU kept fighting and tied the game two minutes later with a second goal from Stauch with an assist from
Katherine Druiett.
No winner was decided after regulation and in overtime the Marlins started slow and were outshot 7-1 but great play by keeper
DJ Holsclaw kept the Marlins tied up for the second overtime.
In double overtime, the Marlins prevailed outshooting their opponents 3-0, with one of those shots coming off
Mary Ruffin who scored a goal in the 78th minute of play with an assist from
Dani Poulsen to give the Marlins a season-opening win.
