Field Hockey End Season on a High with 5-1 Win Over Ferrum

The Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey team (7-11, 3-6 ODAC) defeated conference opponent Ferrum 5-1 in their season finale. This was the Marlins' seventh win of the season and is the most wins since the 2017 season when the program went 7-10.

Virginia Wesleyan outshot Ferrum 22-8, with 16 shots on goal compared to the Panthers' four, the Marlins had 19 penalty corners while Ferrum only had eight, and the Marlins goalie made three saves on four shots faces while the Ferrum goalie had ten saves on 16 shots faces. 

The Marlins fought hard in the first half, outshooting the Panthers 8-0 and had a 6-0 advantage in corners that resulted in a goal from Mary Ruffin with an assist by Lauren Hedspeth

In the second quarter, VWU added to their lead with a solo goal from Dani Poulsen that gave Virginia Wesleyan a 2-0 lead. With under three minutes left in the half, the Marlins were awarded a penalty corner and capitalized with a goal by Katherine Druiett with a nice assist from Lauren Hedspeth

Out of the break, Virginia Wesleyan got on the board early off another penalty corner. Ava Stauch had a shot on target that was saved, and the rebound came to Druiett who passed to Lauren Hedspeth to put the Marlins up 4-0. 

VWU led 4-0 heading into the fourth quarter, and a second goal from Hedspeth put the Marlins up 5-0. With less than three minutes left in the game, the Panthers scored to bring the score to 5-1. 

Lauren Hedspeth led the team with two goals and two assists, Katherine Druiett recorded one goal and one assist, and Dani Poulsen, and Mary Ruffin each tallied one goal.

Emma Wehr started in the net for the Marlins and faced no shots in the win. DJ Holsclaw played in the second half and made three saves on four shots faces.
