FIRST HALF
The Marlins controlled the pace of the game and possession of the ball throughout a majority of the first half. VWU took seven shots in the first quarter and nine penalty corners, while adding four shots and seven corners in the second quarter. Despite their 11 shots, Virginia Wesleyan did not find the back of the cage as the teams entered halftime even at zero-zero.
SECOND HALF
Virginia Wesleyan came out of the break with urgency and passion in their play wanting to find a goal in their last game of the season. Seven minutes into the third quarter, VWU was rewarded when senior Stephanie Hoke scored a goal after corralling a pass from Lauren Hedspeth. The Marlins added a second goal in the fourth quarter as Shannon Gaffney scored her first goal of the season. Hoke sent a pass to Gaffney who put the ball in the back of the cage. VWU took 12 shots in the fourth with six corners en route to the win.
KEY STATS
- Stephanie Hoke scored her fifth goal of the season. Shannon Gaffney scored her first.
- Emma Wehr played all 60 minutes between the pipes recording her second shutout of the season giving up no goals and making three stops.
