VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The No. 4 Virginia Wesleyan softball team defeated the Falcons of Pfeiffer University in game one but fell to the Sea Gulls of Salisbury University in game two on Sunday afternoon at TowneBank Park in Virginia Beach, VA. The Marlins move to 10-1 while the Falcons are now 5-5 and the Sea Gulls move to 2-3.
INSIDE THE SCORE - GAME 1
The scoring took a couple innings as neither team found a run in the first or second innings despite the Falcons leaving one on base in the two innings while the Marlins left two stranded. Pfeiffer left two on the bases in the top of the third while the Marlins put up three in the bottom half of the inning to take the 3-0 lead. VWU's first run scored off a Julia Sinnett single that drove home Ariana Rolle. Madison Glaubke followed with a double to left field that scored Danielle Stewart and Sinnett for the second and third run of the game.
The next two innings were scoreless as VWU left four Marlins on the bags, two in each the fourth and fifth innings, and Pfeiffer in the top of the sixth found their only run of the game as Pennell homered for the solo RBI. Virginia Wesleyan countered in the bottom of the sixth with a single run as Jessica Goldyn came home on a crazy play that saw Brooke Anderson tagged out at home while Katelyn Biando, the batter taking the at-bat, advanced to second on a fielders choice and over throw on her way to second.
The Falcons sent four batters to the plate in the top of the seventh and none could add an additional run as the Marlins downed the Falcons 4-1 and moved to 10-0 heading into their game against Salisbury.
VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by Madison Glaubke with two RBI on one hit in two at-bats. Four Marlins each crossed home plate as Julia Sinnett, Jessica Goldyn, Danielle Stewart, and Ariana Rolle all scored for VWU. Emily Seale (W: 5-0) picked up her fifth win in the circle for the Marlins throwing all seven innings allowing just one run on three hits while walking four and striking out one.
PFEIFFER LEADERS
The Falcons were led by Pennell with the lone run and RBI on her homerun hit. Davis (L: 0-1) threw all six innings for Pfeiffer giving up four runs on seven hits while striking out two and walking three.
INSIDE THE SCORE - GAME 2
The two teams could not find runs in the opening inning despite the Sea Gulls leaving the bases loaded in the top of the first and two in the top second. The Marlins managed to add two in the second to go ahead 2-0. Madison Glaubke scored the first on a double by Daja Burgee to center field and Burgee advanced on a fielding error by the center fielder. Burgee then came home on the next play as Katelyn Biando singled down the right field line.
A few innings passed without any scores despite the Sea Gulls again leaving the bases loaded in the top of the fourth and fifth innings. The Marlins added their third run of the game in the bottom of the fifth as Jessica Goldyn scored on a wild pitch moving the score to 3-0.
A sloppy sixth inning by the Marlins gave the Sea Gulls their first lead of the game as Salisbury put four runs on the board on four hits and an error. VWU could not respond in the bottom of the sixth as they went back to the dugout in order while the Sea Gulls added a fifth run to their lead in the top of the seventh.
Virginia Wesleyan had the walk-off batter at the plate with Julia Sinnett batting and runners on first and second, but she hit into a fielders choice for the third out of the game as Salisbury handed Virginia Wesleyan their first loss of the season 5-3.
VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by Ariana Rolle and Danielle Stewart with two hits a piece. Jessica Goldyn, Madison Glaubke, and Daja Burgee all recorded a run each. Hanna Hulll threw five innings during which she gave up three hits and six walks while striking out five. Emily Seale (L: 5-1) picked up her first loss in the circle throwing a third of an inning but gave up the go-ahead run for the Sea Gulls on three hits.
SALISBURY LEADERS
The Sea Gulls were led by Meyers and Edwards each had two hits and a run for the Sea Gulls in four at-bats. Ortega (W: 1-0, S, 1) picked up the win and the save as the Sea Gulls came from behind to defeat VWU.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to action on Thursday afternoon when the host the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College in non-conference action. Game times are set for 2 and 4 PM.
