Volleyball Closes Out Regular Season with Two Wins

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University volleyball team closed out their regular season with a pair of wins at the Christopher Newport Tournament on Saturday. The squad dropped Salisbury University, 3-1, before taking down the host Captains in a thrilling five-set win in match two. With the results, the Marlins end their regular season with an overall record of 24-7.

MATCH 1: VWU - 3 SU - 1 (25-18, 25-15, 23-25, 25-18)

The Marlins offense was rocking in the opening two sets as the Marlins maintained an attack percentage of over .300. They took a step back in set number three, but were able to regain their footing in the final stanza, capitalizing on some Sea Gull errors as well.

Offensively, Elizabeth Britton and Amber Matalus made a big impact as they finished with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Coming out of the middle was also Sydney Collins, who dropped seven kills. Aiding the effort was the combination of Haley Sutton and Meghan Wood as both registered 19 assists.

Defensively, Alyssa Taylor controlled the back row as she racked up a team-high 20 digs. Britton also chipped in as she ended with 14. 

At the service line, Matalus had a day as she nailed four aces against her foe.

MATCH 2: VWU - 3 CNU -2 (25-19, 20-25, 26-24, 9-25, 15-10)

It was a back and forth match as the Marlins won every other set. Matalus had an impressive outing as she racked up a team-high 18 kills. Britton also excelled as her 15 was second on the squad. Meghan Wood was the primary setter during the match, dishing out 27 helpers.

Defensively, VWU had a trio of Marlins collect double-digit digs. Alyssa Taylor topped the scoresheet as she dug 17 balls, but she was followed closely by Britton who had 15. Sarah Brush would go on to chip in 11 digs as well.

Volleyball returns to action again on Wednesday as the team will host the opening round of the ODAC Championship. The Marlins have earned the second seed and will take on #7 Roanoke.
