VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University volleyball team battled tough in a 3-1 (25-18, 25-19, 16-25, 25-23) loss to Randolph-Macon Tuesday evening at the Jane P. Batten Student Center. With the result, the Marlins are handed their first conference loss of the year (6-1) and move to 17-6 overall. The Yellow Jackets improve to 13-3 on the year and remain unbeaten in ODAC play (7-0).
It was a slow start for the home squad as a strong attack from Macon helped secure the first two sets. Things started to come alive in the third set though as the team hit .323. Setters Haley Sutton and Meghan Wood each contributed a four-serve run to help secure the stanza and start the comeback. In the fourth, the teams were neck-and-neck as the lead exchanged hands seven different times. In the end though, the Yellow Jackets were able to edge out the Marlin squad.
The Marlins backline played extremely well as multiple players finished with double-digit digs. Alyssa Taylor topped everyone with 24 while Elizabeth Britton matched her career-high with 15 and Sarah Brush ended with 14.
The offense was spread out as seven Marlins registered a kill. Britton had a solid outing as her 13 kills and .444 kill percentage led the team.
Volleyball will return to action again at 11 a.m. on Saturday as the team takes on Ferrum at home in another ODAC match up.
