Arlington, Va.- The Virginia Wesleyan University volleyball team split with Marymount and DeSales Saturday at the Marymount Invitational. With the split, the Marlins move to 17-5 overall.
3-1 Loss to Marymount (Va.) (14-25, 25-23, 19-25, 20-25)
After dropping the first set, the Marlins were able to find their footing in the second set starting with Haley Sutton's rally with four-straight service points followed by three-straight service points from Amber Matalus to put the Marlins up 10-4. From then on out the set was pretty even with the Marlins pulling out the victory of 25-21. The saints were able to comeback and pull out the win in the final two sets.
Most of the Marlins offense came from Amber Matalus who had 12 kills, followed by Lauren Topper with 10 kills. Haley Sutton and Meghan Wood both took turns assisting the offense with 20 and 19 assists.
3-0 Win over DeSales (25-23, 25-16, 25-23)
The Marlins came out strong in the second match of the day by using an attack percentage of .313 while holding the bulldogs to an attacking percentage of .195. Amber Matalus led the offense with 11 kills followed by Lauren Topper and Kathryn Yeager who each had 9. The offense was assisted by Haley Sutton and Meghan Wood with 20 and 15 assists. The defense was led by Alyssa Taylor with 14 digs followed by Elizabeth Britton and Haley Sutton who each had 13.
The Marlins return to action against Randolph-Macon on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Jane P. Batten Student Center.
