Volleyball Narrowly Edged by Knights

BUENA VISTA, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University volleyball team narrowly fell, 3-2 (21-25, 25-18, 25-19, 11-25, 17-15), to Southern Virginia University Tuesday evening on the road. With the loss, the Marlins go to 13-4 on the season while Southern Virginia moves to 10-4.

The Marlins got off to a good start as they took the first set over the Knights but then dropped the following two. Needing to win the fourth, Amber Matalus helped shut the door as she went on a seven-serve run towards the end of the stanza. That brought about a deciding fifth set, where the Marlins got within a point of winning, but were unable to close it out.

Matalus led the squad offensively as she finished with 15 kills and two aces. Greta Coss was close by as she racked up 11 kills to go along with five block assists.

Alyssa Taylor played well from the libero position as she dug a team-high 18 balls. Haley Sutton would also finish with a double-double as she dug 13 balls and collected 29 assists.

Volleyball will return to action at 11 a.m. on Saturday as the team travels to Ashland, Va. for matches with Emory & Henry and Guilford.
