VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - It was a tremendous effort that had the Virginia Wesleyan University volleyball team upset No. 20 Christopher Newport University in the Jane P. Batten Student Center Wednesday evening. The match went the distance with the Marlins eventually picking up the win 22-25, 25-16, 14-25, 25-23, 15-13. The win pushes the Marlins record to 6-3 on the year and marks the first time in program history the Marlins have defeated CNU as well as a nationally-ranked team.
The team used some efficient offense in the three sets it won, achieving an attack percentage of .300 in each of the stanzas. Amber Matalus dominated at the net, tying her career-high kills with 16. Doneisha Hall had her top match of the season as both her and Kristina Scott notched 13 kills.
Assists came from both setters on the evening with Meghan Wood's 28 leading the way. Katie Costin chipped in a season-high 18, including one after a VWU timeout with the score tied late in the final set.
The Marlins had a sound game on the defensive side of things as well. The squad racked up 14 total blocks including the match clincher set by Hall and Matalus. On the backline, Alyssa Taylor and Sarah Brush handled things as they came away with 20 and 12 digs, respectively.
Volleyball returns to action at 11 a.m. on Saturday as the Marlins host Shenandoah for another ODAC contest.
