Hornets Outlast Marlins in Marathon Match
LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Lynchburg College volleyball team outlasted Virginia Wesleyan University in five sets on Saturday, 22-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-16, 15-13. It was the first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) loss of the year for VWU.
The Marlins jumped out to an impressive two set lead after connecting for 20 kills in the first two sets. Virginia Wesleyan led the majority of the time, trailing just once in each set.
Virginia Wesleyan looked the put the match away in the third set, pulling within a point at 14-13 on a Meghan Wood service ace. Lynchburg posted the next three points, and eight of the next 12 to go up 22-17. The Marlins would not get closer than four points the remainder of the set.
That momentum carried into the fourth set for Lynchburg as the Hornets jumped out to an early 7-3 lead and did not look back, leading the remainder of the way to force a decisive fifth set.
Lynchburg rallied to scored eight of the next 14 points to go up 8-6, but VWU charged back once again to take a 12-11 edge. Needing just three points for the win, Lynchburg sided out, scoring two more points on serve to force match point at 14-12. Pierson found Scott for a kill to cut the lead to 14-13, but Sydney Frink finished off the final kill on a Lynn Walsh assist for the Lynchburg win.
Scott led the Marlins with 11 kills while Pierson registered 24 assists and 12 digs. Allison Mackley posted a match-high 37 digs.
Frink finished with 14 kills for Lynchburg (7-4/2-2) while Walsh tallied 32 assists to go with 30 digs from Lauren Stanford.
Virginia Wesleyan (7-5/2-1) continues ODAC play on Saturday at Roanoke College (5-5/2-1) for a noon start.
