Virginia Beach, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's tennis team defeated Hollins University 7-2 today at the Everett Tennis Center. It was senior day for the Marlins as they celebrated two graduating team members, Taylor Witherspoon (Fairfax, VA) and Kellen Phillips (Alexandria, VA).
Playing without freshman Audrey Bally (Nice, France) the Marlins were forced to switch up doubles combinations for the first time all season. At #1, freshmen Makayla Velic (Jacksonville, FL) and Courtney Simmons (Reevesville, SC) took down Jhovanna Salmeron and Kate Woodruff 8-3. At #2, junior Katie Staman (Lancaster, PA) and senior Kellen Phillips defeated Amelia Verkerk and Sarah Snoddy 8-1. Ensuring the doubles sweep for the Marlins were junior Kristina Sabelstrom (Colorado Springs, CO) and senior Taylor Witherspoon when they topped Kateri Johnson and Olivia Dannon 8-2 at #3.
In singles, the Marlins took 4 out of 6 matches leading to the 7-2 decision. Senior Kellen Phillips defeated Sarah Snoddy 6-0, 6-0 while senior Taylor Witherspoon ousted Valerie Sargeant 6-1, 6-2. At the top spot Makayla Velic defeated Jhovanna Salmeron 6-0, 6-1.
With the win the Marlin women improve to 11-8 overall and 6-5 in ODAC play. Virginia Wesleyan University will now wait to see what they will be seeded in the upcoming ODAC championships which is scheduled to begin on Tuesday May 1st. The tournament schedule will be released on Sunday May 29th.
