VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University women's soccer team picked up its second-straight 4-0 victory as the team defeated Westfield State University Saturday evening at the Trinder Center. With the win, the Marlins improve to 2-0 on the year while the Owls go to 0-2.
The Marlins got on the board early courtesy of Reina Araujo, who netted her third of the year. Camryn Terry got the play going with a long aired up pass up the middle that Araujo was able to get to first. One on one with the keeper, the junior tucked it away to give the home squad an early lead.
Up 2-0 at the half, the Marlins were far from finished. A corner kick sent in by the Marlins at the 55 minute mark bounced around in the box before Lorenzi got her head on it, shoving it to the goal mouth. It was there that it landed at the foot of Marli Hayward who buried it near post. With just a little under four minutes to go, Alexandra Fitz put the icing on the cake as she tucked home a Mary Alexis Jackson cross.
Tristen Roberts performed well in net for the Marlins, notching her eighth career shutout. She only needed to make a single save, but it was a pretty one as she dove to knock a ball away that was headed for the back of the net.
Women's soccer returns to action at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday as the squad takes on crosstown rival Christopher Newport University at the Trinder Center.
