KANSAS CITY, Miss. - Two members of the Virginia Wesleyan University women's soccer team have been named to the United Soccer Coaches All-South Atlantic Region Teams. Ann Marie Moffett nabbed a spot on the Second Team while Ryan Applewhite earned Third Team honors.
Moffett had a terrific season, starting all 21 games for the Marlin squad. A staple of the defense, the senior helped the Marlins limit their opponents to just 1.00 goals a game. Moffett also was able to move up into the offense, servicing long balls into the box. On one such occasion, in a win over Sweet Briar, Moffett collected her lone point with an assist. At the year's end, Moffett was the sole Marlin to take home First Team All-ODAC honors.
Applewhite turned in another successful year, becoming a key component to the Marlins perimeter offense. The Fairfield, N.J. native used a solid combination of strength and speed to help the Marlins not only clear their own zone from danger, but also to apply offensive pressure down the sides of the field. Applewhite found the scoresheet twice on the season, assisting on a goal against Emory & Henry before notching a goal herself against nationally-ranked Lynchburg. At conclusion of the season, Applewhite picked up Second Team All-Conference honors.
Women's soccer turned in another impressive year, boasting a record of 12-5-4 and going undefeated during the conference regular season (6-0-4). Their efforts earned them an at-large bid to the Division III NCAA Championship where they defeated New York University in the opening round before falling to Swarthmore College in the second round.
