With the score tied 2-2 and time dwindling, the game seemed destined for overtime. Hayward had different plans though. The junior dribbled into opposing territory and ripped a shot from roughly 25 yards out. The ball sailed into the goal over the keeper's outstretched hands, giving the Marlins the lead in with just over a minute left on the clock.
The Marlins opened up with a two goal lead through the first half. Anna Pedicone sent a cross into the box and Brooke Adamchak one-timed it to give the visiting squad the 1-0 lead at the 12:30 mark. VWU then doubled up their lead courtesy of Pedicone. Hayward slipped a through ball past a General defenders giving the sophomore a one-on-one with the netminder. Pedicone made no mistake, sliding the ball to the goalkeeper's left.
Washington and Lee made an attempt at the comeback, holding a man up advantage due to a Marlin red card but their attempt was cut short after the Hayward goal.
Tristen Roberts made three saves through the 90 minutes of play, picking up her eighth win of the year.
Women's soccer returns to action at 4 p.m. on Wednesday as the team squares off against Randolph-Macon on the road.
