Marlins Extend Win Streak with 3-0 Victory
HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan University women's soccer team extended its winning streak to seven matches with a 3-0 win over Eastern Mennonite University on Wednesday night. All seven wins were ODAC contests, moving the Marlins to an 8-1 league mark, best in the conference.
Virginia Wesleyan entered the match tied atop the league standings with Lynchburg, but the VWU victory, combined with a 1-0 Lynchburg loss to Bridgewater gave sole possession of first place to the Marlins.
The Marlins got on the board early when Eastern Mennonite committed a foul in the box in the 12th minute. Alex Davidson took the penalty kick, sending it home for her eighth goal of the season.
VWU scored its final tally three minutes into the second half when Ryan McCurry finished off a rebound for the three-goal lead.
The Marlin defense shut down the Eastern Mennonite offense, holding the Royals to just two shots on the evening. Virginia Wesleyan countered with 24 shots while also holding a 9-0 edge in corner kicks.
Leah Wenger made six saves for Eastern Mennonite (6-8-2/4-5) while Emily Young added two stops in relief.
Virginia Wesleyan (12-5-1/8-1) will look to secure the top seed in the upcoming ODAC tournament with a 5 p.m. Saturday start with Washington and Lee University (10-4-1/7-2). It will be Senior Day for the Marlins as VWU will recognize the 2018 class in a pregame ceremony.
