VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team dropped its contest with Randolph-Macon, 17-6, Saturday afternoon at Birdsong Field. With the result, the Marlins move to 7-6 on the season and go to 3-3 in conference play. Yellow Jackets go to 8=6 on the year (5-1 ODAC).
Macon got on the board first, tallying one within the first three minutes. Abby Shope knotted it back up though with a nice move to her defender at the 27:24 mark. Alyssa Bernal then put in the Marlins second goal at 25:25, giving the home side its first lead of the day. The Yellow Jacket came right back at the Marlins though, scoring the game's next seven goals. Liza Holford would tuck one away in the final two minutes, but Virginia Wesleyan would take a 8-3 deficit into the locker room.
Randolph-Macon came out firing to start the second half, increasing their lead to 12-3 over the first three minutes. A Holford goal halted the run, and the rest of the game was played reltiveely evenly but the deficit was too much to overcome.
Holford's two goals led the squad while Shope, Bernal, Tori Manahan and Jordan Callahan each added one of their own.
Jordan Moilanen played the entire first half in goal for the Marlins, turning aside seven Yellow Jacket attempts. Mike Hairston played the first three minutes of the second half and AJ Adan would stop six shots over the final 27 minutes
Women's lacrosse will return to action at 11:30 a.m. on Friday as the team heads to Washington and Lee
