LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team cruised to a, 27-6, victory over Randolph Saturday afternoon on the road. With the win, the Marlins improve to 7-4 on the year and 3-1 in conference. The WildCats fall to 2-8 on the year (0-2 ODAC).
Things got going early in this one as Tori Manahan tucked away a goal at the 28:02 mark. Randolph answered with one of their own just a minute later but then it was all Marlins. The visiting squad piled in the game's next eight goals from eight different players. Randolph would break up the streak with a couple of their own, but a 7-0 run over the last 10 minutes by the Marlins gave them an 18-5 lead going into halftime.
The second half spelled a similar story as the Marlins outscored the WildCats 9-1 en route to their third conference victory.
Eleven different Virginia Wesleyan players recorded a point in the game, including a career-high nine points on four goals and five assists from Abby Shope. Alyssa Bernal was the lead goal scorer on the day, tucking away six, while Renee Burt followed close behind with five. Manahan (4) and Liza Holford (2) tabbed the WildCats for multiple goals too, while Rachel Fuller, Olivia Serbati, Kayla Gush, Mikayla Callahan, Marie Lerch and Jordan Callahan all finished with one.
The Marlins dominated the restarts, winning 23 of the 35 draws taken. Holford topped all players with six draws controlled, while Callahan chipped in five of her own.
Women's lacrosse returns to action again at 12 p.m. on Saturday as they head to Roanoke for another ODAC battle.
