Women's Lacrosse Upends Quakers at Home

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team cruised to a 15-5 victory over Guilford Saturday afternoon at Birdsong Field. With the win, the Marlins improve to 6-4 on the season and go to 2-1 in conference play. Guilford slides to 5-5 while remaining defeated in ODAC action (0-3).

The Marlins were the first to strike as Tori Manahan netted a free-position attempt just over five minutes in. Rachel Fuller would double that lead less than a minute later as she dumped home a pass from Abby Shope. Guilford split the lead at the 23:46 mark but over the next 13 minutes were held scoreless as VWU piled in four of their own. The home side would hold a 9-2 advantage going into halftime.

After the intermission, Virginia Wesleyan continued to keep their foot to the gas as Manahan and Alyssa Bernal each registered a pair over the first eight minutes. Guilford would score a couple towards the end of the contest, but the damage was already done.

Manahan would end the game with a team-high four goals, recording an assist as well. Bernal, Liza Holford and Renee Burt all ended up with hat tricks, while Fuller and Makayla Callahan ended the day with one. Shope played the role of primary facilitator, picking up an assist on three Marlin scores.

Draw controls were split even at 11 apiece, but Holford was the lead Marlin as she hauled in eight on the day.

The Marlins dominated the 50-50 balls, scooping up 29 compared to the Quakers 16. McKenzie Dowd impressed with a team-high six, while Olivia Serbati had five.

Jordan Moilanen anchored the defense, stopping five of the eight shots she faced. She'd be relieved by Mike Hairston in the final minutes, who picked up one save on a free position attempt.

Women's lacrosse will return to action again at 1 p.m. on Saturday as the team heads to Randolph for another ODAC competition.
