VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team dropped DeSales University, 18-10, Sunday afternoon at Birdsong Field. With the win, the Marlins improve to 3-2 on the season while DeSales slides to 0-3.
The Marlins got up early as Liza Holford tagged the DeSales keeper for two goals in the first eight minutes. The Bulldogs broke up the run with a man-up goal but the Marlins answered right bac with another three. The tides turned a bit near the end of the period as over the last 12 minutes, DeSales outscored VWU 4-1, leaving the Marlins with just a one-goal advantage going into halftime.
Coming out of the break, the two sides exchanged a pair of goals over the first 10 minutes. Virginia Wesleyan then broke out, scoring five-straight by five different players. DeSales attempted to break back in but another five goals from the Marlins nullified any chance.
Holford, Renee Burt and Ashley Campos all came away with four goals a-piece while also contributing a combined three assists. Tori Manahan also hit the hat trick mark, finishing with three. Rounding out the scoresheet was Melissa Runo, Rachel Fuller and Abby Shope, who each finished with one.
On the 50-50 balls, McKenzie Dowd turned in a solid performance as her seven groundballs set a new career high.
In net, Jordan Moilanen picked up the win, stopping a season-high 14 shots on 24 attempts.
Women's lacrosse returns to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday as the team hosts Widener University for another non-conference battle.
