VIRGINIA Beach, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team cruised to a, 28-0, win over Hollins University Saturday afternoon at Birdsong Field. Witht eht win, the Marlins move to 5-1 on the year while Hollins drops to 0-5.
It was all VWU the whole way as the team set the record for goals in a game with 28. The team tagged Hollins for 19 in the first half, while pacing them for nine in the second. The squad saw 11 players score on the day, led by Avery Frangelli's six. Close behind her was Megan Shallock with four and Jordan Callahan and Liza Holford who each recorded three. Rounding out the scoring was Becca Winslow (2), Marie Lerch (2), Ashley Campos (2), Tori Manahan (2), Abby Shope (2), Renee Burt (1), and Rachel Fuller (1).
The Marlins also did well to distribute the ball as the team's 17 assists broke the Virginia Wesleyan single game record. Burt led all players on the field with six, with Manahan pitching in five.
On the draw, VWU doubled up its opponent as the team finished with 20. Manahan did most of the damage, controlling a team-high eight.
In goal, Jordan Moilinen got the start, stopping two shots in her 37 minutes of play. Mike Hairston would finish out the tilt, stopping her one shot faced on a free position attempt.
Women's lacrosse picks up action again at 4 p.m. on Tuesday as the team hosts Elmhurst College.
