Women's Basketball Clipped by Cougars on the Road

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team dropped its contest to Averett University, 63-49, Saturday evening at the North Carolina Wesleyan University Tournament. With the result, the Marlins move to 1-4 on the season while the Cougars go to 3-2.

Virginia Wesleyan found themselves in a hole early as Averett went up 9-2 over the first four minutes. The Marlins battled back though, going on a 12-2 run over the next five minutes which gave them the lead. After one quarter, VWU led Averett 21-20. In the second the teams exchanged buckets, but a couple of defensive stops gave them a seven point lead going into halftime.

In the third quarter, things remained tight as the Marlins drew within a bucket as they saw a pair of back-to-back layups go in to end the stanza. The margin continued to be slim but with just four minutes left in regulation, the Cougars nailed two 3-pointers, creating a gap to large for the Marlins to overcome.

McSweeney had a career day on the boards as she hauled in an impressive 17 rebounds. Also pitching in was Sabrina Jones with eight.

Offensively, it was freshman Jessica Jennings who led the squad as she registered a season-high 17 points. Jones would chip in there as well, finishing with 11.

Women's basketball returns to action at 4 p.m. on Sunday as the team takes on host N.C. Wesleyan.
