Women's Basketball Falls In ODAC Opener to Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team fell, 57-46, in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener to Shenandoah on the road. With the loss, the Marlins fall to 1-3 on the year and drop to 0-1 in conference play.

The first half of the opening quarter went in favor of the Marlins as a Jessica Jennings 3-pointer had the team up 8-4 at one point. The lead would not last though as the Hornets went on an 11-3 run to close out the first. The home side expanded on their lead in the second quarter and would lead by 14 going into halftime.

That lead held all the way until the game's finish, but the Marlins attempted a comeback. Virginia Wesleyan opened up the quarter on a 9-3 run but Shenandoah was able to nullify any chance.

Leading offense for the Marlins were Mak McSweeney and Sabrina Jones, who each ended the game with 10 points. Those two would also top the charts in the rebound column with Jones collecting eight and McSweeney six.

Also pitching in was Isis Moore, who registered eight points and four boards.

Women's basketball will return to action again at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday as the team takes on Averett University in the opening game of the North Carolina Wesleyan College Tournament.
