Richard Drake begins his 10th season at Virginia Wesleyan in 2017-18, serving as the men's and women's hurdles coach.
Drake was the hurdles coach at Christopher Newport University from 1995 through 2008 where his athletes recorded 20 Division III All-American hurdles performances, six national championships, two Division III records, and three Division III National Athletes of the Year. He was also the former hurdles coach for the United States Armed Services Olympic Development team.
Drake also has a long coaching resume at the high school ranks. He was the former high school coach at South Norfolk, Granby, and Maury. He coached six Virginia High School League (VHSL) hurdle champions at Granby and another one at Maury.
He also coached Portsmouth's Wilson High School's LaTasha Colander, a five-time VHSL hurdles champion, national high school champion and Track Athlete of the Year, All-American at the University of North Carolina where she was the national champion in the 100 and 400 meter dashes, an Olympic gold medalist in the 4x400 relay, a world record holder in the 4x200 relay, and a Virginia Sports Hall of Fame member.
Drake was a four-year member of the track and field team at the College of William and Mary where he received his bachelor's degree.
