No. 11 Softball to Face William Peace and CNU this Week

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – No. 11 Virginia Wesleyan softball returns to action this week against William Peace and No. 13 Christopher Newport University.

The Marlins (14-0) will host William Peace (9-9) on Tuesday for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.

The Pacers have won five out of their last seven games. Lindsey Wiggins is the leading offensive threat, hitting .361 with nine doubles, two home runs, and 21 RBI. Heather McLean is also a player to look out for as she is hitting .296 with five home runs. Kelsey Durham serves as the ace for the Pacers with her current record at 7-3 with 64 innings pitched with a 3.50 ERA to go along with a save. The two teams last squared off in 2014 with the Marlins taking both games by the scores of 5-0 and 7-3.

On Sunday, the Marlins will make the short trip to Christopher Newport University to face off against another nationally-ranked foe in the Captains (10-2).

The Captains are coming off a strong weekend of play where they took three out of four games from No. 8 Emory on the road. CNU boasts three players, Jenna Sprinkle, Rachael Payne, and Calah Savage, who are all hitting .500 or better. Savage also has three home runs on the year, while Sprinkle leads the team with 17 RBI. Aubrey Bates (4-0, 0.81 ERA), Tara Heatwole (3-2, 2.31 ERA), and Malven McKnight (3-0, 2.47 ERA) lead the pitching staff for the Captains. The Marlins swept the doubleheader last year in a battle of top five teams in the country with 5-4 and 4-2 victories.

The Marlins are currently hitting .399 as a team with Kiersten Richardson and Cassetty Howerin both hitting an even .500. Richardson is also a threat once she gets on base as she currently leads the ODAC with 20 stolen bases. Last week alone, Richardson batted .577 over eight games with 14 runs scored and 12 steals.

Beth Ford is having success at the plate hitting .464 and is second in the ODAC with nine stolen bases. Howerin leads the ODAC with five home runs and 23 RBI. Pitchers Hanna Hull and Courtney Wright are tied with each other for the ODAC lead in wins with six. Hull also leads the ODAC with 60 strikeouts.
