Marlins Sweep Final Day of Beach Blast
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The No. 11 Virginia Wesleyan softball team swept the final day of the Beach Blast tournament, defeating No. 6 Manhattanville and Keuka to move to 14-0 on the season.
Game 1: 3-0 Virginia Wesleyan Victory
Hanna Hull (6-0) continued her dominance in the circle over a potent offense that led Division III in home runs a season ago, leading the Marlins to a 3-0 victory over No. 6 Manhattanville. Hull allowed five hits in the complete game effort while striking out nine.
The Marlins were able to score another run in the fifth inning when Cassetty Howerin singled to center field to plate Kiersten Richardson. Amy Large capped off the scoring effort with a solo homer to center field in the bottom of the sixth.
Richardson, Howerin, and Beth Ford all stole a base for the Marlins.
Game 2: 11-0 Virginia Wesleyan Victory (5 innings)
Cassetty Howerin had two home runs and five RBI to pace the Marlin offensive attack. Courtney Wright (6-0) got the win for the Marlins, pitching three innings and allowing the only Kueka hit to Katelyn Warren in the second inning.
The Marlins scored in every inning in the nightcap. Howerin singled in Kiersten Richardson to get the scoring going in the first inning. LeAnn Adkins hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored Madison Glaubke to make it 2-0 in the second.
The Marlin third inning was highlighted by a three-run home run by Howerin to right-center field. The very next inning, Howerin hit another home run and Amy Large hit one in back-to-back fashion. Ally Brewer and Richardson had RBI singles in the fifth to account for the final margin.
Virginia Wesleyan returns to Marlins Field on Tuesday for a 2 p.m. non-conference doubleheader against William Peace (8-8).
