Softball Makes First Road Trip of Season
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The No. 25 Virginia Wesleyan College softball team will look to continue its two-game winning streak this week as they take on a pair of USA South opponents in road contests at North Carolina Wesleyan and Meredith.
The Marlins are fresh of an Opening Day sweep over Susquehanna University where Blake Henderson, Cassetty Howerin, Amanda Archer, Jessica Lindsay, Kaylah Duplain, and Liz Bailey all registered at least one RBI.
The Battling Bishops will open their season against the Marlins on Tuesday with a doubleheader slated to start at 2 p.m. N.C. Wesleyan returns its top hitter from a year ago, senior Brittany Manning, who hit .403 with six home runs and 23 RBI. Sophomore Shelby Godwin is a two-way talent who hit .360 while going 3-3 in the circle last year with 31.0 innings pitched.
The two teams met last year in the early part of the season with the Marlins taking both games by the scores of 4-2 and 8-0.
The Marlins will head south to North Carolina once again to take on the Meredith College on Saturday. Meredith is currently 2-4 on the young season as juniors Brittany Bucklin, Eran Artigues, and Erica Occena lead the way offensively. All boast batting averages above .400, while Bucklin and Artigues have each connected for two home runs.
The pitching staff is lead by junior Taylor Jackson who is 2-1 with a 4.20 ERA. Freshmen Myah Morse and Julia Cerasi, combined 0-3 on the year, will contribute in the circle against the Marlins.
The two squads last met on April 13 of last season when the Marlins won 10-2 and 8-0, both games ending in six innings by run rule.
