HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan College's No. 11-ranked softball Marlins extended a winning streak to eight straight games with a 4-0 victory over Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) in the first game of Wednesday's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader.

But, that streak was snapped in the second game as EMU (3-1, 1-1) pinned a 3-1 upset on the Marlins (11-3, 1-1), scoring three runs in the last three innings to take the win.

Virginia Wesleyan took the lead in the opener with three runs in the first inning.  Junior Taylor Galvin (Virginia Beach/Kempsville) led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch, and took third on a single from Cassety Howerin (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney).  Sophomore Blake Henderson (Virginia Beach/Ocean Lakes) reached on a fielder's choice to third base to send in the run.

Rookie Teresa Cardamone (Herndon/Chantilly) kept things going with a single to third base to score a run. Henderson advanced to third and scored on a fielding error.

The Marlins made it a 4-0 lead with a run in the fifth.  Junior Kayla Dost (Bristow/Nokesville Brentsville) doubled to center field to score Galvin, who drew a walk earlier.

VWC banged out 10 hits in the game, led by Sami Pearce (Powhatan/Powhatan), Galvin, and Cardamone with two each. Senior Kristina Karagorgis (Ashburn/Briarwoods) improved to 5-2 in the circle with the pitching win as she fanned six Royals, walked one and scattered five hits.

Jorday Aylor (Madison/Madison County) took the pitch loss, striking out four, walking three, and allowing 10 hits. Aislinn Lucas (Grottoes/Fort Defiance) led EMU hitting with two hits.

VWC's usually potent bats were nearly silenced in the second game, as the Marlins managed only a single each from Courtney Bogan (Round Hill/Woodgrove), Howerin, and Henderson. Henderson also recorded a first-inning sacrifice that scored VWC's only run in the game.  The Marlins put runners in place with two walks and Howerin's single, before Henderson came to the plate.

Junior Mary Shipp (Virginia Beach/First Colonial) absorbed her first loss of the season in six starts for the Marlins.  She struck out one batter, walked three and gave up seven hits.

Angela Miller (Bridgewater/Turner Ashby) and Nicolette Cuevas (Suffolk/King's Fork) led EMU with a double each. Lauren Seale (Madison/Madison County) (2-0) took the pitching win after striking out three, walking three, and giving up the three singles.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Saturday, March 21, in an ODAC doubleheader at Lynchburg College at 1 p.m.
