GUILFORD, N.C. – The Virginia Wesleyan University men's tennis team edged out Guilford, 5-4, Saturday afternoon on the road. With the victory, the Marlins improve to 7-6 on the season while improving to 2-0 in conference action.
In doubles play, Virginia Wesleyan picked up their sole point in the third slot. Timothy Tep and Anthony Wilson teamed up to drop their opponents 8-2. Paul Gladstone and Michael Portera played a very tight match at second doubles, but were edged in a tie breaker.
Down 2-1 after doubles play, the Marlin needed some big performances on the singles side. Andreas Combos came up with a point in the second slot as he took down his Quaker foe 6-1, 6-1. Tep followed that with a win at third, 6-4, 6-1. The final two points came from the bottom of the lineup, courtesy of Anthony Wilson and Portera. Wilson breezed to a 6-2 win in set one before edging his opponent 6-4 in the second set. Portera would get the match clinching point at sixth, shutting out Guilford's Kai Glass before winning set two by a score of 6-4.
Men's tennis will return to action at 4 p.m. on Friday as the team heads to Randolph-Macon for another conference tilt.
