VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University men's tennis team competed in their first home match of the season this afternoon in an ODAC showdown against Emory and Henry. Despite a delayed start time, the Marlins still took down the Wasps without dropping a set.
Mitchell Perry and Nick Gunther got the ball rolling early with an 8-1 win at number 1 doubles. This was quickly followed by an 8-3 win from Timothy Tep and Anthony Wilson at number 3 doubles. Shortly after, Michael Portera and Paul Gladstone won 8-4 at number 2 doubles.
With a 3-0 lead going into singles play, the Marlins quickly capitalized with a 6-2, 6-0 win from Nick Gunther at number 2 singles and a 6-0, 6-0 win from Andreas Combos at number 3 singles. Timothy Tep at number 4 singles and Paul Gladstone at number 1 singles completed their matches soon after by winning 6-0, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-0 respectively. At numbers 5 and 6 singles, Mitchell Perry and Anthony Wilson took care of business as well with a 6-0, 6-0 win for Perry and a 6-1, 6-1 win for Wilson.
With the win, the Marlins improve to 2-3 on the season and 1-0 and ODAC play. Coach Marty Perry's squad will be back in action on March 10th for a non-conference test against the Averett Cougars. The match will take place at Virginia Wesleyan's own Everett Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
