Salisbury, MD - The Virginia Wesleyan University Men's Tennis team visited Salisbury University on Saturday where they played a double header. After a tough morning loss to Salisbury, the Marlins defeated Goucher College in their afternoon match for their first win of the season. Last season the Marlins fell 9-0 to Goucher, picking up their first win over the Gophers in recent memory.
The afternoon began with doubles where the Marlins opened with a 2-1 lead. This came thanks to Mitch Perry and Nick Gunther who won 8-6 at 1 doubles. Despite a loss at 2 doubles from Michael Portera and Paul Gladstone, Timothy Tep and Anthony Wilson won 8-4 at line 3 to give the Marlins momentum going into singles.
Andreas Combos, Paul Gladstone, and Nick Gunther were first to take the singles court. Gunther and Gladstone fell first to give the lead back to Goucher. Combos however, avenged his loss to Goucher's Slade Dumas in a 7-5, 6-3 win. At this point, the match was 3-3 with three more singles matches to be played.
To give the Marlins a 4-3 lead, freshman Timothy Tep earned his first singles win of the season 6-4, 6-3 at 4 singles. Anthony Wilson then clinched the match for Virginia Wesleyan at 6 singles in a clinical 6-0, 6-2 win.
With the win, the Marlins are now 1-3 on the year. They will be returning home this coming Saturday to take on Emory and Henry. First serve is scheduled for 12 pm.
