TEMPE, Ariz. – Five members of the Virginia Wesleyan University women's tennis squad and two from the men's team have been named to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic honor roll. Jacklyn Cheely, Abigail Horgan, Kellen Phillips, Kristina Sabelstrom and Makayla Velic all made it from the women's side while Andreas Combos and Drew Fairbanks both earned the honor on the men's.
The ITA honored 735 collegiate programs with the All-Academic Team Award, which is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or above. Additionally, more than 4,300 athletes were recognized across all divisions with the Scholar-Athlete Award. To be a scholar-athlete, the student must be a letterwinner, have a GPA of at least 3.5 for the current academic year and be enrolled for at least two semesters.
Both squads performed well on the courts this year with the women finishing with a record of 13-9 (11 more wins than the previous year) and the men at 13-8 (8 more wins than the previous season). Each side made its way to the conference tournament with the men falling in the semifinals to eventual winner Washington and Lee and the women making it all the way to the final before falling to the Generals as well.
