VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University men's tennis team had four members named to the All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Teams for their performances during the 2018 season. Mitchell Perry and Nick Gunther teamed up for a First Team doubles selection while Anthony Wilson and Michael Portera each garnered spots on the Second Team singles list.
Perry and Gunther paired up at the first doubles slot to combine for 11 wins on the season, falling just three times. The squad picked up a key, 8-3, victory over Bridgewater in the ODAC Championship First Round as the team edged the Eagles 5-4. During the middle of the season, the duo seemed unbeatable as they went on a 10-match win streak.
Wilson and Portera had tremendous first years as Marlins, holding down the bottom of the order for VWU. Wilson held a clean record (10-0) at fifth singles before eventually suffering his first loss of the year against Washington and Lee in the conference championship semifinals. Portera followed his fellow classmate's success securing eight victories slotted in the sixth singles position. The Raleigh, N.C. native gathered a solid win in the conference opening round and was the only Marlin to be ahead of his General opponent (6-3, 2-2) at the matches conclusion.
Men's tennis had a solid year, finishing the year with eight more wins than the previous season (13-8). The squad also advanced to the conference tournament semifinals for the first time since 2016.
