VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - After four and half hours the fourth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan University men's tennis team sealed up a 5-4 win over #5 Bridgewater in the first round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) quarterfinal matchup at Everett Tennis Center Wednesday evening. With the win, the Marlins move to 13-7 on the year.
The clinching point came by way of Anthony Wilson as he had a match go the distance with all three sets going to a tie break. The freshman took set one by a score of 7-6 but then dropped set two 6-7. The third set was deadlocked at 6-6 but Wilson won the tie break 7-3 to capture the team's victory.
The day started well with the Marlins winning two of the three doubles matches. Nick Gunther and Mitchell Perry teamed up for a win at first (8-3) while Paul Gladstone and Michael Portera took care of business at second (8-4).
Entering singles play, it was the bottom of the order that helped lead VWU to the 'W'. Perry found himself down in the fourth slot after losing the first set 5-7, but came back with a pair of 6-1 victories to pick up a point. Portera handled his opponent with ease as he won 6-1, 6-1. The final Marlin point of the match came from the previously mentioned Wilson.
Men's tennis will resume action on Saturday as the team will square off against the top-seeded Generals of Washington and Lee at home.
