Marlins Battle to Take Down Eagles, 6-3

Virginia Beach, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's tennis team knocked off Bridgewater College 6-3 today at the Everett Tennis Centerin ODAC play.

In doubles, freshman Mitch Perry (Johns Creek, GA) and Nick Gunther (Ras Tauna, Saudi Arabia) moved to 6-0 in ODAC play at #1 doubles with an impressive 8-5 win over Joe Dillenbeck and Josh Rodgers.  At #2 doubles, Marlins team of junior Paul Gladstone (Port Orange, FL) and Mike Portera (Raleigh, NC) outplayed Freddie Roberts and Nate Horner in an 8-3 decision. The Eagles claimed #3 doubles 8-5 putting them on the scoreboard.

With the Marlins up 2-1 after doubles play the Marlins came out strong in singles by taking 5 out of 6 first sets.  At #3 singles Marlin's Nick Gunther defeated Emmett Johnson 6-4, 6-4. At #4, Mitch Perry took down BC's Freddie Roberts 6-3, 7-5.  With Paul Gladstone battling Joe Dillenbeck in a 3rd set at #1 singles freshman Anthony Wilson (Lynchburg, VA) clinched the match for the Marlins with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Nate Horner at #5.  For good measure Mike Portera earned his point at #6 by defeating Sonet Gandhi 6-1, 6-4 as well.

With the win the Marlins improve to 12-6 on the year and 7-1 in ODAC play.  Bridgewater falls to 9-6 overall and 6-2 in conference play. The Marlins travel to Lexington on Friday to take on first place Washington and Lee. From there VWU will head to Farmville to for a Saturday match-up with Hampden-Sydney.
