Virginia Beach, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's tennis team defeated Randolph-Macon College 7-2 this afternoon at the Everett Tennis Center on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan University. It was the first home match for the Marlins since they defeated Centre College 6-3 on March 19th.
The Marlins came out red hot in doubles when sophomore Nick Gunther (Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia) and freshman Mitch Perry (Johns Creek, GA) swept past RMC's Alex Hein and Baxter Carter 8-0 at the #1 spot. At #2 doubles, freshman Mike Portera (Raleigh, NC) and junior Paul Gladstone (Port Orange, FL) took down Grant Sarver and Erik Moultan 8-3. With the Marlins up 2-0 the Yellow Jackets clawed their way back in the match by taking #3 doubles 8-6.
In singles action the Marlins kept the foot on the gas by taking 5 out of 6 first sets. Nick Gunther was first off the court for the Marlins taking down Alex Hein 7-5, 6-1 at #3 singles. Next off was Gunther's doubles partner Mitch Perry when he defeated Erik Moulton at #4 singles 6-3, 6-1. With the Marlins up 4-1 and needing only one more point to clinch Portera finished off Jack Aprahamian 6-3, 6-4 for the team win. Also picking up singles wins on the day for the Marlins was Paul Gladstone and Anthony Wilson at #1 and #5 respectively.
With the win the Marlins improve to 11-6 overall and 6-1 in conference play. Randolph-Macon falls to 7-5 and 3-3 in ODAC play. VWU will host Bridgewater College in a meaningful late season match this Saturday at the Everett Tennis Center. Match time is set for 1 PM.
