Lynchburg, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's tennis team took down Randolph College 5-0 today in their first match since spring break. Due to rain in Virginia Beach the match was moved to the Crosswhite Fitness Center in Lynchburg, VA.
In doubles, the Marlins came out hot claiming all three spots 8-2, 8-0 and 8-0 respectively. At #1 doubles sophomore Nick Gunther (Ras Tanra, Saudi Arabia) and Mitchell Perry (Johns Creek, GA) were up 7-0 before the Randolph #1 team earned their first game; Gunther then held serve at 7-2 for the deciding game. At #2 doubles freshman Anthony Wilson (Lynchburg, VA) and sophomore Andreas Combos (Raleigh, NC) enjoyed a partial hometown crowd in their 8-0 shutout of Brad Strober and Joe Kaneda.
In singles, junior Paul Gladstone (Port Orange, FL) gave up a early 4-1 lead at #1 singles to Strober before rallying by taking 11 out of the next 12 games earning a 6-4, 6-1 win. At #2 singles Combos cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 over Daniel Crutcher clinching the match for Marlins. At #3 singles Mitchell Perry was up 6-0, 1-0 over Joe Kaneda when the match was suspended due to being clinched.
The Marlins improve to 7-6 and will take on ODAC rival Lynchburg tomorrow at 2:30 in Lynchburg.
