Charleston, Sc. - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's tennis team fell 9-0 to Division I Citadel on Thursday afternoon in Charleston, SC.
Playing under the NCAA Division III format the Marlins dropped #1 and #2 doubles 8-1 and 8-2 respectively. At #3, junior Paul Gladstone (Port Orange, FL) and freshman Mike Portera (Raleigh, NC) were able to gain traction for a while holding off the Bulldogs #3 team of Trey Davis and Willem van Zyl before falling 8-3.
In singles, freshman Mitch Perry (Johns Creek, GA) dropped the first set 6-1 to Citadel's Noah Nawabi before coming back in the 2nd set only to drop the match 6-1, 6-4. At #1 singles Gladstone fell to Matt Henson 6-3, 6-1 in the longest match of the day.
With the loss the Marlins fall to 6-6 while The Citadel improved to 9-19 on the season. The match in Charleston marked the end of the Marlin's annual spring break trip where they finished the week 2-2. Next up for the Marlins will be a home match against Randolph College set for April 7th. Match time is 1 PM at the Everett Tennis Center.
