Hilton Head, Sc. - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's tennis team defeated the University of St. Thomas 7-2 on Wednesday evening in Hilton Head, SC.
A day after falling to St. Olaf College 6-3, the Marlins righted the ship and came out strong to take down St. Thomas in emphatic fashion; earlier in the season St. Thomas defeated St. Olaf 6-3.
The Marlins began the match slightly sluggish falling behind beaks in all 3 doubles spots. At #1 freshman Mitch Perry (Johns Creek, GA) and Nick Gunther (Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia) overcame an early break of serve to take the top spot 8-6. With St. Thomas serving 6-7 and down 15-40, Perry took a short ball with a one handed backhand down the middle for a clean winner to break serve for the win. Shortly thereafter the Marlin's #2 team of freshman Anthony Wilson (Lynchburg, VA) and Andreas Combos (Raleigh, NC) gutted out a 9-8 win at #2 playing a slow and scrappy two back style and putting the Marlins up 2-0. At #3, junior Paul Gladstone (Port Orange, FL) and freshman Mike Portera (Raleigh, NC) came up just short falling 9-8.
In singles, the Marlins jumped all over St. Thomas by taking 5 of 6 first sets and went on to win 3 matches in straight sets. Mitch Perry was first off for the Marlins with a 6-2, 6-1 win at #4 putting the Marlins up 3-2. Next off for the Marlins was Portera where he locked down a 6-1, 3-6, 10-7 win at #6. With the Marlins up 4-2 Wilson clinched the match for the Marlins at #5 with a 6-2, 6-4 decision and giving the Marlins a 5-2 lead. For good measure Paul Gladstone held on for a 6-3, 6-2 win at #1 while Andreas Combos pulled out a marathon 7-6, 2-6, 10-7 win at #2.
With the win the Marlins improve to 6-5 on the season. The Marlins are on short rest as they will head north to take on Division I Citadel tomorrow at 1:30 PM in Charleston, SC.
