Hilton Head, Sc. - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's tennis team fell to St. Olaf College 6-3 today in Hilton Head, SC bringing their spring break record to 1-1 on the week.
The Marlins had a slow start in doubles dropping both #1 and #2 doubles, 8-0. Neither teams were able to gain traction and were unable to get on the scoreboard for the first time this season. Keeping the Marlins in the match were freshman Mike Portera (Raleign, NC) and junior Paul Gladstone (Port Orange, FL) when they took #3 doubles 8-5 and dodging the doubles sweep for the Marlins.
In singles the Marlins made things competitive by taking the first sets at #5 and #6 singles and losing tight opening sets at #2 - #4. Mike Portera made quick work of his opponent at #6 singles, 6-1, 6-1 to even the match at 2-2. At #2 singles, sophomore Andreas Combos (Raleigh, NC) jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first set only to drop it 7-5. He battled back in the 2nd set taking it 6-3 before losing the 10 point match tiebreaker 10-7. At #4 singles, freshman Mitch Perry (Johns Creek, GA) came back to take the 2nd set 6-3 after dropping the first set 6-4. Again the Marlins came up short in the match tiebreaker dropping this one 10-8. Both Gladstone and sophomore Nick Gunther (Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia) each dropped their matches in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 & 6-4, 6-4 at #1 and #3 respectively. At #5 singles freshman Anthony Wilson was able to earn the 3rd point for the Marlins in another 3 set match, 6-1, 5-7, 10-7.
With the loss the Marlins fall to 5-5 on the season while St. Olaf improves to 3-3. VWU continues their spring break schedule tomorrow when they take on the University of St. Thomas at Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Club. Match time is set for 4 PM.
