Hilton Head, Sc. - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's tennis team earned their 5th victory of the season with a 6-1 decision over Union College on Saturday evening in Hilton Head, SC.
The Marlins jumped out to a 1-0 lead when the #1 doubles team of sophomore Nick Gunther (Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia) and freshman Mitchell Perry (Johns Creek, GA) took down Union's David Bond (Chapel Hill, NC) and Max McGeown (Lexington, MA) 8-3. At #2 doubles, junior Paul Gladstone (Port Orange, FL) and freshman Mike Portera (Raleigh, NC) found themselves down early and dropped the match 8-2. With the match knotted at 1-1 all attention shifted to court 3 where Marlins freshman Anthony Wilson (Lynchburg, VA) and sophomore Andres Combos (Raleigh, NC) were keeping things close before before taking the 7-7 tiebreaker 7-1, giving the Marlins the 2-1 lead heading into singles.
The Marlins came out strong in singles by taking 5 of 6 first sets. Nailing down their singles point first for the Marlins was #3 Mitchell Perry by taking down junior Max McGeown 6-2, 6-4. Shortly thereafter Paul Gladstone captured #1 singles over sophomore Del Schunk 6-1, 6-4. With the Marlins up 4-1 both Mike Portera and Nick Gunther each locked down their courts using 3rd set breakers within minutes of each other giving the Marlins the 6-1 win. Both Andreas Combos and Anthony Wilson were up on their opponents before the lights turned off and both matches were suspended.
With the win the Marlins improve to 5-4 on the season while Union falls to 3-6. Next up for VWU will be a Tuesday match-up against St. Olaf College at Chaplin Park on Hilton Head Island. Match time is set for 1 PM.
