Marlins Start Fall Season at Yellow Jacket Invitational
ASHLAND, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University men's tennis team kicked off its fall season over the weekend at the Yellow Jacket Invitational. The two-day event included Centennial Conference member Washington College along with Randolph-Macon and Bridgewater from the ODAC.
Over the weekend freshmen Anthony Wilson, Ishan Chatterjee, and Mitchell Perry made their VWU debuts. Wilson led the Marlins with three total wins. In singles, Wilson defeated R-MC's Baxter Carter 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 2 flight and Bridgewater's Emmett Johnson 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 3 flight.
At the No. 1 flight, junior Paul Gladstone went 1-2 in the top spot defeating R-MC's Jacob Heins 7-5, 6-2. Sophomore Andreas Combos, senior Drew Fairbanks, and Chatterjee each picked up singles wins over the weekend as well.
In doubles for VWU, Perry and Joe Holloway defeated R-MC's No. 2 team 8-3 after dropping a close 8-6 decision to the No. 2 squad from Washington College. Wilson and Gladstone defeated Bridgewater's Nathan Horner and Freddie Roberts 8-5 after dropping their first two decisions 8-4 and 8-3 respectively.
Up next for the Marlins will be the ITA South Atlantic Regional Championships. The tournament will be held at Mary Washington University over the weekend of September 29.
