Big First Half by Lutz Helps R-MC Past Marlins
ASHLAND, Va. -- Bryan Lutz scored two goals in the first half to help the No. 4-seeded Randolph-Macon College to a 3-1 victory over No. 5 Virginia Wesleyan College in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) quarterfinals on Wednesday afternoon.
Lutz broke through on a good cross by Andrew Gyimesi from the right of the box for the initial score of the match at 30:14. The Yellow Jacket capitalized on a back pass, chasing it down and heading it past the keeper for his second goal of the game and the 2-0 Macon lead just two seconds before halftime.
The Yellow Jackets scored their final goal at 66:36 when Logan McHugh found Liam Hogan who turned into the box following a corner kick for the insurance tally.
The Marlins ruined Randolph-Macon's bid for a clean sheet when senior Tanner Martin scored on a free kick from 35 yards out.
Brian Breslin made two saves for Randolph-Macon (9-4-2) while Jay Fox stopped four shots for the Marlins.
Macon held a 19-12 edge in shots and 5-1 advantage in corners.
Randolph-Macon will advance to face the winner of No. 1 Lynchburg and No. 8 Randolph in this weekend's semifinal.
Virginia Wesleyan conclude the season at 8-6-4 with a 4-2-3 mark in ODAC play.
