ODAC Tournament Preview – Men's Soccer

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan College men's soccer team will face a familiar foe as the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's soccer tournament kicks off this week.

The format varies slightly this year because of men's soccer's unbalanced schedule, with nine teams making the tournament instead of the eight teams that have traditionally found their names listed.

The Marlins, the No. 5 seed in this year's field, will travel to No. 4 Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday with a 3:30 p.m. opening kick.

These two squads faced off at Virginia Wesleyan this past Wednesday, October 26, with the Marlins coming away with a 3-0 victory. Senior Tanner Martin posted his first hat trick in the contest while Jay Fox corralled six saves. The Marlins outshot Macon 12-11 despite the Yellow Jackets holding a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

The Marlins enter tied for sixth in the ODAC with 1.71 goals per game while R-MC sits in fourth with 1.94 goals per game. VWC sits fifth in saves however with 85, while R-MC is ninth with 60.

Martin leads VWC in goals (8) and points (16) while Ricky Perrault and Andrew Duenke have five goals each to lead the Marlin offensive attack. Bennett Wiley leads the team with four assists while Alex Suprise has three.

Fox has proven himself one of the top goalkeepers in the conference during his sophomore campaign. He is second in the ODAC in save percentage (.830) and third in goals against average (0.97). He will be tasked to once again slow down the Yellow Jackets, who are led offensively by Logan McHugh who sits third in the league with seven assists.

Anthony Astruc paces Randolph-Macon with six goals and is second on the squad with 14 points. Brian Breslin, the Randolph-Macon goalkeeper, is not in the top five in any major goalie category, but can be just as challenging for an opposing offense as Fox as demonstrated by his six shutouts on the year.

Other ODAC Quarterfinals

No. 1 Lynchburg vs. winner of No. 8 Randolph/No. 9 Guilford

Lynchburg defeated Guilford 2-0 earlier in the year and had a scoreless draw at Randolph. Both contests came on the road so either the No. 8 or No. 9 will venture to LC for the first time this year. Lynchburg is one of two unbeaten teams in ODAC play.

No. 2 Washington and Lee vs. No. 7 Bridgewater

The Generals and Eagles played on the last day of the regular season and will face off again just four days later. W&L traveled to Bridgewater and downed the Eagles 4-0. The Generals are led by Dylan Ritch, who is one of just two ODAC players with double-digit goals (12) this season. His 30 points are second in the league.

No. 3 Roanoke vs. No. 6 Eastern Mennonite

Roanoke is the remaining unbeaten team in ODAC play and defeated EMU 4-0 at home on October 12. The Maroons are coming off back-to-back ties with the top two seeds in the league. Eastern Mennonite enters the tournament as the ODAC's hottest team, winners of four-straight to earn a spot in the field. The Royals have scored 11 goals in the four wins.
